Using Overdrive eBooks

Overdrive eBooks, available from the NH Downloadable Books Consortium, will work on most e-reader and tablet devices.

For Kindle devices or devices with a Kindle app:

  • Browse the NH Downloadable Books Consortium, either from your computer or from your device.
  • When you find an available ebook you would like to checkout, select “Borrow.”  If the ebook is currently checked out, you may “Place a Hold.”  Or tap the bookmark icon (it looks like a gray ribbon poking out of the bottom of the book cover) to add this title to your Wish List.
  • Be sure to choose the Kindle format when you download.
  • You will be redirected to the Amazon website to check out your book.
  • The next time you connect your device to a wireless network, your book will be downloaded to your Kindle device or app.  If the title requires a USB transfer, follow the directions from the Amazon website to download the book to your device.

overdriveappFor all other devices: Whether you are able to download an app to your device or if your device requires a USB transfer, you will need an Adobe ID to authorize your device.  At some point during the setup, you will be prompted to create or enter an Adobe ID.

For devices that allow apps:

  • Go to the app store on your device.  The Overdrive App is free to download.
  • Select “Get Books.”  After you enter your zip code, choose your library.
  • The NH Downloadable Books Consortium page will appear.  Selecting the person icon will bring you to your account so you can sign in.
  • When you find an available ebook you would like to checkout, select “Borrow.”  If the ebook is currently checked out, you may “Place a Hold.”  Or tap the bookmark icon (it looks like a gray ribbon poking out of the bottom of the book cover) to add this title to your Wish List.
  • Be sure to choose ePub format when you download.
  • Select the Bookshelf icon to see your newly downloaded book.

For devices that require a USB transer:

  • You will need to download Adobe Digital Editions.  From the NH Downloadable Books Consortium webpage, click on Help (next to the Account icon), and go down to Get Software
  • Browse the NH Downloadable Books Consortium, either from your computer or from your device.
  • When you find an available ebook you would like to checkout, select “Borrow.”  If the ebook is currently checked out, you may “Place a Hold.”  Or click the bookmark icon (it looks like a gray ribbon poking out of the bottom of the book cover) to add this title to your Wish List.
  • Be sure to choose ePub format when you download.  You will need to have Adobe Digital Editions installed before downloading!
  • The downloaded file will open in Adobe Digital Editions.  Attach your device to your computer via USB.  Your device should appear in the lefthand panel.  Drag and drop the books from your library (on the right) to your device (on the left).

Tip: A great feature of the new website is located in the upper right-hand corner of each book cover.  You can quickly tell if the item is an eBook or an audiobook (eBooks have a book icon, audios have a headphones icon), and just as quickly see if the title is available – available titles will have a black icon, checked out titles will have a grayed-out icon.

Tip: I like to check the NH Downloadable Books website weekly and add new titles I’m interested in to my Wish List.  That way, when I’m looking for an available book to check out, I have a list of all the titles I want to read and can easily see which ones are available.  To add a title to your Wish List, click or tap on the gray bookmark poking out from the bottom of the book cover.  Titles you have already added to your Wish List will have a red bookmark.  To view your Wish List, select “Lists” under your account.

I just want to search for a book

Overdrive books do appear in our catalog (on our menu under Books & Media, click on “Catalog”) with a link to the New Hampshire Downloadables site. Or you can go directly to nh.lib.overdrive.com and do a search – the search box is in the upper right hand corner.

      We apologize for the inconvenience.

Because we now offer downloadable ebooks via not one but two different platforms, it’s been either (1) very confusing for patrons as to the difference between the two or (2) we’ve discovered that patrons used to the NH Downloadable Books site (“Overdrive” platform) didn’t even know we had thousands of titles via 3M (the newer of the two platforms). Conversely, newcomers to ebooks are stumbling upon the 3M titles in our catalog and not realizing there are thousands more titles via Overdrive.

The problem: 3M is compatible with–and integrated into–our regular catalog but to date, Overdrive is still working towards compatibility thus the only way to access those titles so far is to go directly to the Overdrive site (as you’ve been doing for the past few years). We have no way for patrons to see them all in the catalog where they should be. So how can we make sure that patrons know they have access to all of these titles…they’re just located in two different places until the software companies decide to play nicely together?

The solution: The change we made this week to our website—direct patrons to a single page that has links to both platforms.

If you wish to go directly to the Overdrive page and disregard all of the other titles in our collection, you can still do so by creating a shortcut on your desktop.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience.

Apologies! We were having some issues with our menu bar and somehow the link was changed.
